Misconception Nigerian Graduates have about the Workplace
A misconception is an idea that is wrong because it has been based on a failure to understand a situation. Misconception is an idea that is wrong or untrue, but which people believe because they do not understand the subject properly. There are many misconceptions about the workplace. Whether it’s about how you work or where you work, some things may not be as you think when it comes to working in an office environment.
Here are few misconception Nigerian graduates have about the workplace
Being trained when hired
Believing your employer will train you when they hire is a big LIE!!!! Just a few organizations spend time and money to train and retrain their staff. The truth remains that most organizations want to maximize profits using the few hands available. Therefore, they target talents. The question you should ask yourself is are you trainable? Being trainable does not just require that you can learn but that you have a basic background.
Right now, candidates are hired based on the skills they possess. Unless you are thinking of working with a super foreign company, no employer is willing to spend so much training staff on various skills. Therefore, you must make yourself indispensable by continually learning and growing. You must understand that when organizations train their staff, they see it as investments. Now, will you be a good investment?
The question you ask yourself is what special skill do I have that is not common? Or what am I so good at? If none, then you have to take action and equip yourself with some skills especially in the ICT world; because we are in the digital age.
Continuous Learning
The day you stop learning is the day your brain stops functioning because learning is a continuous process. In today’s world, continuing education and lifelong learning are the keys to success in the workplace. You may be done with your full-time studies, but there will certainly be many opportunities for you to return to the classroom during your working years.
Aside from Doctors, Nurses and Lawyers, there is no guarantee that you will not be posted to a school. So even if you are not learning, you will be teaching in a classroom.
My co-workers will be excited to have me on the team
Fresh graduates are usually energetic and enthusiastic because they are still new to the workplace routine as well assume other workers in the firm will think alike. While your co-workers may welcome you with open arms, remember you are entering a different realm in life and may not be the center of attraction. As you seek to add value and learn more about your role, be mindful of the norms in the workplace. Learn who your advocates are. Learn which individuals to be friends with which to avoid in your workplace.
