International Women’s Day (IWD) 2022
International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global holiday celebrated annually on March 8 to commemorate the cultural; political, and also socioeconomic achievements of women. It is also a crucial point in the women’s rights movement; bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, violence and abuse against women.
Spurred on by the universal female suffrage movement that had begun in New Zealand; IWD originated from labor movements in North America and Europe during the early 20th century.
International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made and to call for change. The day marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. IWD is more than just a hashtag on social media. It is a day celebrated internationally by at least 100 countries all over the world
Advancing gender equality in the context of the climate crises; and disaster risk reduction is one of the greatest global challenges of the 21st century.
Women are increasingly being recognized as more vulnerable to climate change impacts than men; however, they constitute the majority of the world’s poor and are more dependent on the natural resources which climate change threatens the most.
At the same time, women and girls are effective and powerful leaders and change-makers for climate adaptation and mitigation. They are involved in sustainability initiatives around the world, and their participation and leadership results in more effective climate action.
The United Nations observance of International Women’s Day is held every 8 March; the theme for this year’s observance is “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”.
The year 2022 is pivotal for achieving gender equality in the context of climate change; and environmental and disaster risk education, which are some of the greatest global challenges of the twenty-first century. Without gender equality today, a sustainable future, and an equal future, remains beyond our reach.
This year’s IWD observance is in recognition and celebration of the women and girls; who are leading the change on climate change adaptation and response; and to honor their leadership and contribution towards a sustainable future.
