Tips on Becoming an Indispensable Employee
An indispensable employee is one who is very valuable to an organization as a result of his/her job efficiency. Hence, the organization would not want to dismiss them.
Being indispensable to an organization offers significant benefits not only to the organization but also to the employee. He/she will be dimmed fit for better opportunities as they arise; and be rest assured of job security, among other benefits.
Here are four (4) tips on becoming an Indispensable Employee:
#1. Understand your Job Function and the Organization as a Whole.
For you to become indispensable, there is a need for you to know and understand your job responsibilities, organizational goals, and standards. Know what pleases your employer and what does not. By so doing, you can identify what matters to the organization and ultimately understand what you can do to add value to them and avoid problems.
#2. Hone Relevant Job Skills
Many employees under-perform because they are deficient in skills that are relevant to their jobs. To be indispensable at your work, you need to possess the skills that are important to your job; and valuable to your employer. It is beneficial that you follow a career growth path to upgrade and update your skills to meet with company development.
By acquiring new skills, you would be differentiating yourself from most others. Besides mastering the skill set required to perform your job well, continued growth makes you more marketable and increases your chances of advancing within the organization.
#3. Be Resourceful and Reliable.
To be resourceful and reliable is to be able to utilize available resources to get things done in time, quality, and to the satisfaction of your employer.
Your worth will be measured by how much value you can add to the organization. Hence, you will stand out and be more worthy if you always aim for excellence and learn to be extraordinary by going the extra mile. Look at the business you work for as a whole entity and not just the piece you work on and come up with new ways to make things better. Find ways to make things work even when others feel they are impossible and won’t do them. You should also anticipate tasks and get them done without being told.
Also, be the one that people would want to reach out to for your support by always being willing to share knowledge. By showing support, you will help others appreciate you, and they will want you to succeed.
#4. Portray the Right Attitude
Your attitude is the most obvious of your attribute, and it can send a negative or positive impression about you to your employer.
To develop the right attitude towards work, you need to understand the personalities of your employer, coworkers, and other individuals. Know what pleases and displeases them, and act in the right way.
You should be humble, trustworthy, polite, and one who maintains a good relationship with others. You should also show dedication to your work, be punctual, attractive, exude confidence, keep to policies and follow instructions. Employers value and would rather keep people with the right attitudes that match their organizational standard than those with the wrong attitude.
All of these will make you stand out and increase your value to your colleagues, employer, and the organization as a whole.
