On Tuesday, 13^th December 2022, Terraskills held the Grand Launch of Graduate Employability Skills^® (GES^®) Program, an initiative poised to enhance the employability of 10,000 Nigerian Graduate.

The event marked the graduation ceremony of the 20 Pioneer batch (out of over 375 applications received) of the GES^® initiative who had undergone intensive 3-months training comprising of a 1-month readiness assessment, 1-month inhouse training, and a 1-month internship program.

Welcome Address by the General Manager, Terraskills

The General Manager of Terraskills, Mr. Donald Ejieke Ogbuwa gave a warm welcome address acknowledging the presence of invited guests.

He reiterated the goal of the GES^®initiative; to bridge the skills gap and equip graduate with requisite skills to enhance their employability, and reduce the problem associated with unemployment in Nigeria.

In his address, he noted that through her years of operations, Terraskills has successfully trained over 4,000 Nigerians in both public and private sectors of the Nigerian economy.

Formal Launching of the GES Foundation.

The Chairman of the occasion Mr. Shekarau Omar, Executive Director, Small and Medium Enterprises commended the Terraskills GES^® initiative and formally launched the GES^® Foundation.

He pledged his support and willingness to engage the Graduates of the GES^® training to help secure their future.

Director General of ITF commended the Terraskills GES initiative

Professor Joseph Ari, Director General of ITF, the keynote speaker, represented by Mr. Zachariah John Piwunna applauded the Terraskills GES^® initiative.

He gave a remarkable keynote address on the topic; “The Nexus between Skills Employment and National Productivity”.

In his speech, he noted that Skills Employment is critical to National Productivity, and for Nigeria to fully exploit the benefits derived therefrom, deliberate efforts by Government at all levels, the Organized Private Sector, Non-Governmental Organizations and other relevant stakeholders must be committed towards development of relevant and employable skills development of the Nigerian Populace.

In furtherance to the Keynote address by the DG ITF, the Program Manager of Terraskills, Mr. Ada Ada Innocent, presented a unique solution by Terraskills tagged “JobPrimers Recruitment Solutions” which is poised to enhance the recruitment processes for Corporate Organizations; noting that the system will allow employers post job applications, receive and assess numerous application through rigorous screening process that ensures only qualified and best candidates are recommended without hassle.

To help promote organizational growth and profitability, the audience were enlightened on a topic; Promoting Employee Engagement to achieve Organizational Growth and Profitability through a panellist discussion by industry experts inclusive of:

Following the Launching of the 20 new employable GES^® Maiden Trainees by the General Manager of Terraskills, positive testimonials about the GES^® initiative were shared.

The GES^® Maiden Trainees gave testimonials about the GES^® training, stating how long they had been unemployed, how the GES^® training is impacting them and how it will be beneficial to the other Nigerian Youths.

Application is Open for the Second Batch of the Terraskills GES Training

Background

The unemployment rate in Nigeria rose from 23.1 percent in the third quarter of 2018 to 33.3% in the fourth quarter of 2020 (NBS, 2020). With a labour force of over 120 million people, this means over 22 million Nigerians are unemployed.

The cause of unemployment in Nigeria is multifaceted. Experts have attributed the heightened unemployment rate to the dearth of skills. Employers argue that the average Nigerian graduate does not possess the skills needed for a formal employment and therefore not employable.

To curb the effects of unemployment ravaging the country and to ensure every graduate is equipped with requisite skills for the workplace, Terraskills Graduate Employability Skills (GES) is the bridge that connects graduates with their desire for a better life; GES arms graduates with the requisite skills to unlock their full potential.

About GES

The Terraskills Graduate Employability Skills (GES) programme is a 2-month learning experience, where the participants undergo 1-month inhouse training during which they will be exposed to 12 engaging training and learning modules aimed at preparing them for the workplace; thereafter, they will proceed for 1-month Graduate Internship with a reputable organization to expose participants to real life work experience and allow them to showcase their skills, which will enhance their chances of becoming employed in the internship organisation or creating a beneficial network leading them to becoming gainfully employed and self-sustainable.

The first batch of the training kickstarted with 20 shortlisted Nigerian graduates in September 2022, and the training fee was sponsored by philanthropists and corporate organizations (Medialand Nigeria Ltd, and PolicyTV among others).

Where is GES taking place?

The actual fee for the GES training is ₦550,000/participant. However, the fee is sponsored by some philantropists and corporate organizations, hence participants bear no training cost.

To be deemed eligible, applicants must be:

Nigerian,
a graduate of any University, Polytechnic, College of Education or equivalents.
preferably be resident in Abuja; with sponsorship, candidates outside Abuja may be considered.
unemployed at the moment.
available for the duration of the training (2-months).

Application and screening process

The application portal for the second batch of the GES Training is currently open. The application opens on the 30th of September, 2022 and Closes on the 30th of December 2022.

The selection of applicants will be based on fulfilling the eligibility criteria, and GES assessment. Participants will be carefully selected through a rigorous process that will ensure only qualified candidates are selected.

Applicants will have to fill in their information, take a pre-assessment test, and write an ‘indication of interest essay’. Selected applicants will be invited for a physical interview.

Onboarding Corps Members into the Terraskills Digital Skills Training (TDST)

Following our successful graduation ceremony for 2022 Batch A Corps Members on Saturday 20^th August 2022 for Data Analytics training, today at Terraskills, we onboarded over 25 Corps Members for the second batch of the Terraskills Digital Skills Training (TDST) for Corps Members.

In our rapidly changing, hyper-connected world, the information and communication technology (ICT) industry is driving economic growth, innovation, and job creation. More than 50 percent of today’s jobs require some degree of technology skills, and experts say that the demand for the technological skill is going to skyrocket.

In spite of the huge career opportunity created by Information and Communication Technology, a significant percentage of the Nigerian youth are being left behind; as employers worldwide say they often cannot find people with the right skills needed to meet their business objectives, especially when they are recruiting for technology-related jobs.

As a means of enhancing the employability of Nigerian Graduates, and helping them become more self-sustainable, Terraskills in collaboration with NYSC is equiping Corps Members with requisite 21^st century digital skills that align with market demands to help them build their career and greatly increase their chances of securing employment and achieve career success.

At the onboarding ceremony, the Corps Members were; given warm red-carpet reception, taken on a tour of Terraskills Facility, enlightened about the solutions offered by Terraskills, given warm welcome to Terraskills by our General Manager, given orientation about Data and their learning journey.

The practical TDST training commences fully on Saturday, 24^th September, 2022 at Terraskills. The onboarding ceremony for 2022 batch B Corp Members was successful. The event was fully covered by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), and will be aired soon.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu Hails the Terraskills Graduate Employability Skills (GES) Initiative

During the Grand Opening Ceremony of the maiden edition of the Graduate Employability Skills^® (GES^®) training that was held at Terraskills Head Office at No 14, Sunyani Street Wuse Zone 1, Abuja on Tuesday 13^th September 2022, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, the Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate hailed the GES programme developed by Terraskills; he pledged his support to the programme noting that it was a unique initiative to promote the employability of young Nigerian graduates.

The Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate

It was an honour to have the Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate declare open, the Maiden Edition of the Terraskills Graduate Employability Skills training; an initiative poised to equip 10,000 Nigerian Graduates with requisite 21st Century skills and Emotional Intelligence necessary and sufficient for 21st Century living, for self, business, community and the nation.

While giving his spectacular speech at the GES Grand opening ceremony, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu stressed the need for equipping graduates with requisite skills to make them employable and productive, as he attributed the low productivity and inefficiency in the public and private sectors to lack of requisite skills among workers.

He pledged his support to sponsor up to 50 graduates in the Terraskills GES training, and also share meaningful life lessons with shortlisted trainees of the GES Maiden Edition.

The Deputy Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate

The Deputy Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate, Distinguished Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi who is also the Founder of Terraskills explained that it took the company up to 3 years of research to create the auspicious GES solution. He stated that the initiative aims to improve Human Capital Development and company productivity, while reducing the population of graduates without jobs in Nigeria.

The Distinguished Senator Bulus K. Amos

The Distinguished Senator Bulus K. Amos stated that Nigeria has lots of Graduates that are not employable, not because they are not technically educated but because they lack the basic skills that employers are looking for; skills that drive workplace productivity and employee engagement. Addressing the Shortlisted GES trainees, he encouraged them to make good use of the Internship Opportunity that will be availed to them by Terraskills in the course of the GES training to demonstrate the skills they have learnt and secure their future.

The Director General of ITF

Representing the Director General of ITF, Mr. Aminu A. Mohammed congratulated the founder of Terraskills for his remarkable initiative to impact knowledge to youths, stating that the founder’s initiative is almost similar to what ITF is doing in equipping individuals with skills. He congratulated the shortlisted trainees and encouraged them to make good use of the opportunity presented to them.

He stated that until majority of our young people become actively engaged in meaningful employment and business ventures, the nation will continue to bleed. He addressed the issue of skills deficit and skills mismatch stating that hiring managers agree that most candidates interviewed do not have a basic idea about the job roles. He listed the positive impact the GES training will have on Nigerian Graduates in improving self-development, productivity and engagement, and the community at large.

The BDM of Terraskills

The Business Development Manager of Terraskills, Miss Falade Olaitan Idowu enlightened the participants of the event about Terraskills, sharing the core solutions offered by the organization for enterprise, individuals and family. She stated that over the past 14 years of operations, Terraskills has successfully trained over 4,000 Nigerians in both public and private sector of the Nigerian Economy, and the good news is that the Terraskills Tracer Studies shows that over 85% of the Terraskills Alumni are gainfully employed and doing very well in their careers.

At the event, some of the shortlisted trainees of the GES Maiden Edition shared their job search experience, the reasons why they applied to the GES training, their expectations and their appreciation for being selected.

The GES training is set to commence on 19^th September, 2022 with a month Inhouse training at Terraskills, and a 1-month internship at reputable organizations. We are certain that GES training will go a long way in addressing the problems of unemployment in Nigeria.

The Inception Workshop for GES Maiden Edition 2022

The Inception Workshop

On Wednesday 31st August 2022, the inception workshop for the Maiden Edition of the Terraskills Graduate Employability Skills (GES) training was successfully held at Terraskills with 18 out of the 20 shortlisted candidates, as the other 2 were absent for personal reasons.

Arrivals

Upon arrival at the inception workshop, the candidates were first given warm red-carpet reception and a tour of Terraskills state-of-the-art facility. The Inception workshop began with an Opening Remark by the General Manager of Terraskills, Mr. Donald Ejieke Ogbuwa.

The Special Guest of Honour

The Distinguished Senator, Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (Baraden Borgu), Deputy Chief Whip of the 9th Senate was the special guest of honour at the event. He encouraged the candidates to make good use of the opportunity presented to them.

The Programs/Presentations

The shortlisted GES candidates were briefed about Terraskills and also the GES Trainee Policy to keep them abreast with the rules of engagement for the GES training.

Subsequently the Program Manager of Terraskills, Mr. Ada Ada Innocent presented a paper on Bridging the Digital Gap to open the candidates understanding to the possibilities of increased participation, collaboration, and advancement in the digital skills sphere for employment.

The General Manager of Terraskills gave the candidates lecture on the Progress Mindset; what it means; what makes it different from the fixed mindset; steps to developing a growth mindset and manifestation of success!

The GES Unique Brand Ambassadors

In the course of the GES Inception Workshop, the 18 GES trainees were conferred the honour of being the Unique Brand Ambassadors for the Terraskills GES training for a period of one year from 31st August 2022 to 30th August, 2023.

By the end of the inception workshop, the GES candidates were given appetizing meals, and group photographs were taken.

Terraskills for Kids Inhouse Challenge 2022 was Successful!

The super interesting Terraskills for Kids Inhouse Challenge 2022 was held live at Terraskills on Saturday, 13th August 2022.

The aim of the challenge was to celebrate and encourage skills acquisition among young Nigerians by awarding scholarship opportunities to enable participants learn coding, and earn a brand-new laptop among other benefits.

Kids won scholarship on training fee at different levels based on their performance in the following challenging activities and fun games:
