A Guide to Successful Job Application: Avoiding Common Job Search Mistakes.
Job search becomes a challenge when it is done wrongly, however, if done appropriately it can help you get hired.
Here are 10 common job search errors you should avoid for a successful application:
1. Procrastinating on viable leads.
When you come across a job listing that you fit for, do what you can to apply sooner rather than later even if there is still time to deadline. Sometimes employers begin to call for an interview as soon as they identify qualified candidates even before the deadline posted on their job adverts. Therefore, don’t wait a week or two with the assumption that there is time to deadline, because by then the opportunity may be gone.
2. Not finding out about the right medium for sending your application.
Submitting a hard copy of your application to a company that recruits solely via online submission will be a waste of time and resources. Therefore, you should do well to find out the best medium through which a company receives an application before sending one.
3. Leaving the subject of your application blank.
Never leave the ‘Subject’ of a job application blank just because you have attached your resume in the mail. Sometimes Employers recruit for different positions at a time, hence sending your application without a subject indicating the position you are applying for, will render your application undefined, and as a result, an employer may not pay attention to it.
4. Begging for any kind of job in an organization.
Employers want employees who are passionate about a job position and role, therefore seeking for just any position in an organization is an indication that you lack direction, career goal, and passion, thus employers will doubt your ability and commitment.
5. Sending applications without studying the job role and the company’s requirement.
Your resume should tell a hiring manager why you are qualified for a position. Studying the job roles and requirements can help you shape your application to meet the company’s demand. Besides, being aware of the job roles and requirements can help you prepare for likely interview questions you would encounter, thus preparing you for success.
6. Job search without utilizing networks.
One of the most underutilized areas in the job search process is your network. Rather than only sending your resume into a black hole of online applications, reach out to people in your network to see if there’s any way they can lend a hand. Also, attending networking events, volunteering, or arranging meet-ups are great ways to build your network.
7. Relying on your network to land you a job.
Although the importance of utilizing a network in a job search has been stated above, however, having a network recommend you for a job is not a guarantee that you will land the job. You still need to prove to the hiring manager you are the right person for the opportunity. Therefore, you should ensure your resume meets the company’s standards and you are well prepared for an interview.
8. Leaving errors on your resume.
Your resume is often the first opportunity you have to make a positive first impression, so if you want to be taken as a serious candidate, be sure to scrutinize your resume to avoid errors.
9. Dressing inappropriately for a Job Interview.
Following your application, your appearance at an interview is the second thing an employer will judge you with. Dressing inappropriately for a job interview can happen in two ways; under-dressing and overdressing. Research about the company standard to make sure your appearance gives them a good impression about you.
10. Putting all of your eggs in one basket.
Don’t neglect other job opportunities just because you have been scheduled for an interview at a company. Being invited for or having attended an interview does not mean that you will necessarily land that job.

I wish I can understand what you mean by underdressing and overdressing. If a company is hiring based on dressing then that is a misplaced priority. “Do not judge a book by its cover”

I think ur point 2 is not necessary cos I don’t know how many companies that still collect hard copy CV. Everything has been made digital. My opinion though I stand to be corrected.
