Pursuing Excellence…

Excellence is the quality of being outstanding or being extremely good at what you do. It is our desire to excel or be known as people of excellence. I don’t think there is anybody who is fine with being mediocre. People only settle because it’s usually their comfort zone. It is truly not easy to diligently pursue excellence. This is because excellence requires character and value, one which reflects discipline.

According to Aristotle,

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

Whether it is settling for your comfort zone or pursuing excellence, we are indeed what we repeatedly do. Our lives reflect our beliefs, actions and inactions. As much as what we do, the decisions we take are important, the actions we do not take and the decisions we don’t make or miss also determines whether we excel or retrogress in life.

How you do anything is how you do everything. Remember this. Apply this and begin to develop the habit of excellence in your life.

There is no part of an excellent mans’ life that is not excellent. To excel is really not as hard as people think. I believe that it takes more effort to remain stagnant than to grow. Growth is not a motion that has a stationary phase, I strongly believe that as far as growth is concerned, there are only two phases, viz: progression and retrogression; In my opinion, it is a spectrum.  

How does one pursue excellence?

You must be goal-oriented to excel. Goals are very essential ingredients in excelling in life. Setting goals means you want to have a plan or a blueprint; what is a man without goals? Ensure that your goals are SMART.

Identify your core skills and grow them

In my previous post, I talked about the importance of self-awareness and self-discovery. Identify your strength or core skills and develop them in such a way that you become known for those skills. You can go beyond your strength to identify skills that are required or necessary for you to succeed in your job. Then work on the skills you have identified.
