It is possible to live without purpose but what joy does life bring without having what to live for? The importance of self-awareness in self-discovery cannot be overemphasized. Being self-aware helps discover yourself;
The day you discover who you are, that day you begin to live. You not only live, but live intentionally.Whitney Edna Ibe
Self-awareness is crucial because it allows us to have a deeper understanding of ourselves and see ourselves as unique. It is this knowledge that empowers us to adjust and to capitalize on our strengths while also identifying areas where we may grow.
Self-awareness and self-discovery
Many of us, in fact, believe that we must always appear as if we know everything, or else people would doubt our talents and, ultimately, criticize us. If you’re being completely honest with yourself, you’ll admit that the reverse is actually true. Because everyone sees your flaws, whether you admit them or not. Rather than concealing their flaws, the person who tries to hide them draws attention to them, giving the impression of a lack of integrity and self-awareness.
This is the real problem since everyone can see what you’re attempting to hide; hiding your flaws isn’t a sign of strength, but of weakness. It’ll only be a matter of time before others understand you, and then what? Insight that you don’t know everything or becoming aware of your weaknesses is true strength; it is with this understanding that strength emerges.
Self-knowledge and goal setting
Self-knowledge or Self-awareness is frequently the first step toward setting goals. Your goals are usually a reflection of your vision and purpose; considering your strengths. A clear understanding of your own needs, desires, failings, habits help you set better goals.
It (self-awareness) is linked to emotional intelligence as well as success; helping you to choose the possibilities that best suit your skillset, interests, and proclivities, allowing you to lead yourself down the appropriate route.
It enables us to anticipate our own reactions by making it easier to identify situations and people who trigger our triggers; as well as help us to make beneficial behavioural shifts that can lead to increased personal and interpersonal success.
