Can you Be Alien to Your Environment?
So many people believe that you can separate yourself from the happening in your environment; while this seems vague, it is true in certain areas of life, when you come to the firm resolve to succeed. But there is definitely a limit to this; and it is capable of breeding a jungle society where survival of the fittest becomes the norm.
Take the Nigerian scenario, for instance, the youths have been termed lazy, unwilling to learn, daydreamers; wishful thinkers. The truth is that there are deep-rooted problems that have turned once enterprising youth the one who just seeks for his/her daily bread; little wonder the song by Doris Day became a sort of an anthem in young minds;
“Que Sera, Sera,
Whatever will be, will be
The future’s not ours, to see
Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be.”
– Doris Day
The resolve to live by the day and hope for a better tomorrow or I dare to say a better dispensation gradually fades away as the same who dreams of a better tomorrow disenfranchises himself by selecting leaders because of ethnic or religious alignments or financial gains.
How can hope survive when he who hopes, hopes in hopelessness?
My mentor once described the hopelessness one feels when trying to stand strong; to lift others when everything around them says otherwise; In his words, “what do I tell them?”
The challenges the youth faces in my dear country is enormous; sometimes the youth is his problem. He stands against himself in the face of terror. This is evident in the recent protest; when some have decided to demand a better environment, a better future, others make themselves available to be corrupted to thwart the efforts of those who demand a better nation.
“How I sting myself from behind,
My venom makes me blind
Why I hold myself ransom confuses me;
Yet I am the substance that pervades my environment
I am everywhere;
My skin is seen from the North to the South
From the East to the West
No! tribe nor religion does not divide me;
I am first, Nigerian;
Then why do I betray myself?
– Ada Ada
What is your truth?
Is it possible to alienate yourself from your environment?
Your immediate environment forms your present reality and this reality is the truth you know.
I recalled telling myself that I wasn’t a corporate lad; this truth was that of my situation and not the universal truth that governed my being; this became obvious when I became the corporate lad I told myself I wasn’t.
The truth is that I am not alone; the hungry man thinks of a way to solve his hunger (immediate need); in doing so, he sees the rich as wasters; he says to himself “I can never waste money on such frivolities”. This is his truth and he maintains the firm resolve to back his truth.
What is your truth?

Interesting!
I believe the environment we find ourselves can have great influence on how we think and live.
If the way of life of the people, their expectations and the happenings in the environment does not tally with ones way of life and have nothing to contribute to ones success, i feel it is right to dissociate from such environment.
An environment that is favorable for ones social life and goals would create learning opportunities and foster collaboration which would contribute to ones success.
