How to Optimise your Immune System
‘How to optimize your immune systems‘ is one of the most important questions people ask when it comes to protecting oneself from frequent infections; especially in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Our immune systems can be likened to soldiers and worker ants protecting the queen in an anthill ecology. Our immune systems are our body’s defence against infections from all kinds of pathogens (disease-causing microorganisms); such as bacteria, fungi, parasites, viruses. The one major way we can enhance our immune systems, is to live a healthy lifestyle; and this we can achieve through;
Eating healthy
It is critical to maintain a healthy immune system by eating the correct foods. Balanced diet, particularly proper vitamin, mineral, and protein intake, boosts resistance to illnesses. We must also ingest foods that are regarded to be our first line of defense against free radicals; such as vitamin C, E, and beta-carotene-containing meals, on a regular basis. Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons. Vitamin C and beta carotene are found in red bell pepper. Garlic is beneficial to one’s health since it has a high concentration of sulfur-containing substances such as allicin.
Getting proper rest
The importance of a good sleep cannot be overemphasised. You must have noticed that when you don’t sleep well for a long time, you easy get the flu.
During sleep, your immune system produces proteins called cytokines, some of which encourage sleep. Certain cytokines must be increased when you have an infection or inflammation, or when you are stressed. Sleep deprivation may reduce the production of these beneficial cytokines. Furthermore, when you don’t get enough sleep, you have fewer infection-fighting antibodies and cells.
As a result, your body requires sleep to combat infections. Long-term sleep deprivation also increases your chances of obesity, diabetes, and heart and blood vessel disease.
