The Life of a Job Seeker: Episode 5
Episode 5: The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)
The National Youth Service came with different experience for the 5 buddies. The major problem was that by the end of the service, Kobi and Femi became poorer than they were before their youth service. Pause! Did I just say that was the major problem? Pardon me. If ending up broke was the major problem the two encountered during their youth service, it would have been better. I reiterate, it would have been really better. NYSC came with its own problems but these two evoked a bigger problem for themselves towards the end of the service year.
When Kobi saw his posting letter, he was disappointed to discover that he was posted to serve in Sokoto. “Why on earth am I being posted to Sokoto”, he exclaimed! “What happened to Lagos or Abuja that I dreamt of?” But then, when he heard that coincidentally, Kwasi and Femi were also deployed to Sokoto, he gradually became soothed. Kwasi however, swore to redeploy after camp while Femi on the other hand was indifferent about the posting. In Femi’s words, “we go rugged am till the end”
Life in Camp
In the beginning, adapting to camp life wasn’t easy. It took the friends some time to adapt to the awkward lifestyle of queuing for food daily like group of slaves ready to take their meal after a long day hard work; waking up in the early hours of the morning for exercises; attending boring lectures etc. But then, towards the end of camp, life in the camp became enjoyable when exciting activities set in. Exciting activities like Man ‘O’ War, cultural events; inter platoon competitions like; football, dance and drama, Mr Macho and Miss Big, Bold and Beautiful among others. Don’t be in a hurry to skim through “Miss Big, Bold and Beautiful” as the major problem evoked by Femi and Kobi was linked to her.
Nadia from Platoon 9 won the Miss Big, Bold, and Beautiful competition. The gorgeous damsel astonished a number of corpers not only with her elegance but also with her intelligence; Femi was no exception. In his words “I go like roll with that pumpkin”. In Kobi’s words, she is cool but I am contented with my babe. Femi mocked saying “that your Sophia wey no get nyansh”. Kobi responded, I don’t care about stuff like that, I adore her just the way she is! He then teased, “I don’t even know why NYSC brought I and silly you together instead of my Pretty Sophia. Anyways, I am glad she is serving in a better place.
Fast Forward to the Embarrassing Moment
It’s no news that despite requesting for the sizes of prospective corpers during registration for NYSC, in camp, corpers will most definitely end up receiving Khaki trousers and jacket that are about 5 times bigger than them. This especially, makes me wonder why the National Youth Service Corp keep seeking to know prospects’ sizes when they know they will practically end up distributing sacks to them in camp. Subsequently, in a bid to fit the clothes to size, materials get wasted, and corpers also end up spending ridiculous amount putting the attires to shape at the Mami market.
Nadia, being a slay mama that she was, went quite overboard while slimming down her kit to the point where they became too tight. But then, everything was going smoothly and she was catching the attention she needed as the classy Miss Big, Bold and Beautiful until the attention became embarrassing in her bid to cross over a wall during one of the camp activities. She knew she was doomed for when she heard a scrrrrrrr sound, felt a massive breeze between her thighs, and heard the echo of laughter by multitude as she raised her right leg up to cross over.
The Connection
Femi the good Samaritan, who was already looking for an opportunity to connect with Nadia, quickly pulled his khaki jacket and rushed to cover her with it. To cut the long story short, Nadia became friends with Femi, Kobi and Kwasi afterwards.
Following their connection, Femi, who had always managed whatever food provided by NYSC, became a regular customer of restaurants in Mami market for the remaining four days in camp. He spent the last of his money on meals for Nadia in order to impress her. Nadia, on the other hand, merely played along and had no desire to take their friendship to the next level.
The Place of Primary Assignment (PPA)
Finally, it was the end of camp and expectedly, NYSC presented another shocker to many corpers with the PPA postings.
Kobi and Femi were posted to teach in remote villages in different secondary school. How on earth does this relate to our visions as engineers, they cried! Nevertheless, if it was a nice secondary school in a beautiful location, it probably would have been fair. The 2 friends went on the search for the location of their PPA only to discover that it was in a deserted village that suffered epileptic power supply. No water, internet or close by market! The environment felt like a completely new world to them. They concurred that the service was going to be a crazy one.
Since their PPA were close, they rented the nicest apartment in the village to live together. However, this best apartment was no different from a local silo for storing grains. Whenever they needed to make calls, they always had to hop up a mango tree like monkeys to connect to network.
Ditching NYSC
The day Kwasi visited them in their silo, he made a very big mockery. “How can you both be living in a place like this?”, he asked in amazement. “It’s only 4 months into service and you both are already looking like deflated balloon, so how will you both look like by the end of your service?”
During his visit with them, Kwasi who was posted to a chemical industry around the city centre and lived in a luxurious apartment in the area shared his plan to ditch the remaining months of the service year. Despite being posted to a PPA that could help him gain practical work experience as it relates to his field of study, he couldn’t bear to settle down. He said to Kobi and Femi, “I have had enough of this service experience, I miss home and I want to return”.
Even though Kwasi’s rented apartment was quite far from their resident, Femi pleaded that Kwasi allowed them access to the room till the rent expired so that they could spend some time there to regain their sanity whenever school was not in session. Kwasi agreed to Femi’s request. He bribed his PPA and ditched the remaining few months of his youth service. Before he left Sokoto, he hosted a party to mark the end of his youth service at 4 months.
The Initiation of Problem
In the 10th month of their service, when schools were on holiday, Femi and Kobi moved to Kwasi’s apartment to enjoy a luxurious lifestyle. One Friday evening, they crossed path with Nadia at a store in the city centre and she promised to pay a visit to them at their resident the following day. Femi gave her Kwasi’s home address pretending that the apartment was his.
Since Nadia agreed to visit them the next day, Femi started nursing the feelings of sleeping with her. He said “Finally it is time to reap the fruit of the seeds I sew in Nadia’s life while we were in camp. She can’t just enjoy my money for nothing. Thank God Kobi will be at the football field at the time of her visit”. But then Femi felt Nadia might not yield to his desire willingly so in preparation for her visit, he went to the pharmacy to buy some hypnotics and aphrodisiac.
The D-day
The D-day came and upon Nadia’s arrival, she was mesmerized by the beauty of the apartment and believed that Femi must be from a very wealthy home. Femi offered her a bottle of drink that was preloaded with hypnotics and aphrodisiac. She took about half of the drink and dozed off within few minutes of her arrival. What a job Weldon, he smiled. He locked the door, put the key in his pocket, picked her up from the sitting room to the bedroom, and bonked her.
While Femi was on his act, Kobi returned from the field very tired. Since he met the door locked, he assumed Femi must have gone out. So, with his spare key, he gained entry to the house. He settled in the sitting room unaware that an immoral activity was ongoing in the bedroom. He sighted the remaining drugged drink Nadia left on the table and gulped it all into his belle. Afterwards, he slept off on the floor in the sitting room.
Few minutes later, Femi finished with his act while Nadia was still drowsy. He walked to the sitting room and was surprised to find Kobi lying on the ground, and the bottle of drink emptied. As a sharp guy with tortoise brain that he was, a foolish thought popped into his mind. He went to the room, carried Nadia and lay her very close to Kobi, after which he zoomed off the house. While rolling in his sleep, Kobi rolled over Nadia and suddenly opened his eyes. He was utterly surprised and confused to find uncladded Nadia sleeping beside him. At his state, he couldn’t resist the urge he felt and so he went ahead to bonk her while she gradually regained consciousness.
The Regret
After satisfying his urge, Kobi’s eyes became clear and he began regretting his action. Confused as to what to do next, he quickly called Femi to confide in him, explaining that he didn’t even know how it happen. Femi played innocent and pretended not to have done anything, saying; “guy you fuck up, why would you do that to a poor girl”. He told Kobi to calm down as he would soon be back.
When Nadia gained full consciousness, she wept bitterly. Even though she wasn’t very conscious while the incident happened, she had some memory flashed that helped her tell that Femi had also slept with her. Kobi awed when he discovered that Femi who played innocent all along had also done something with her when Nadia started cursing at him also upon his arrival. Femi didn’t expect that she would be able to tell that he also bonked her. However, no amount of sorry was enough to pacify Nadia, she wept bitterly and left in shame.
At one week to POP, Femi and Kobi were feeling bad about not being able to save money from their youth service. They were still in their worried mood when Nadia came crying that she was pregnant. “For who?” they both exclaimed?
The question is, who do you think is responsible for the pregnancy? Femi or Kobi? If you were in their shoes, what would you do?
