Tips on How to Staying Healthy at Work
As an employee, you know that staying healthy benefits you in many ways: fewer missed work days, greater productivity and less stress. Staying healthy is good for your pockets too, in the form of lower health care costs. So when you’re going to the office and working in close quarters every day, how can you stay healthy?
Highlighted below are some of the best best practices to staying healthy at work:
Wash your hands often
Hand-washing is the number one way you can prevent yourself from getting sick. There is no such thing as washing your hands too much. Although it may seem obvious, many don’t take it as seriously as they should. Always wash your hands before you eat, after using the restroom, and after sneezing or coughing.
Keep your workspace clean
The average desk harbors hundreds of times more bacteria than a toilet seat. Therefore, ensure you clean and organize your work area frequently. Keep sanitizing wipes and spray at your desk and wipe down the surfaces often.
Drink more water
Staying well-hydrated is crucial to your productivity, energy levels and overall health. Water helps you stay alert and refreshed, and promotes clear thinking.
Keep hand sanitizer at your desk
As stated previously, there are many times when it is best to wash your hands; however, it’s understandable that during the workday you may not always be able to step away from your desk to do so. In those cases, such as after sneezing or coughing, immediately use hand sanitizer. Keep some handy at your desk, so it can be applied immediately and used in between hand washings when needed.
Avoid others who are not feeling well or exhibit symptoms of illness
Whenever possible, avoid close interactions with others who may be sick. Wash your hands after spending time at or near the work space of someone who is sick, sneezing or coughing. Also, it’s a good idea to make sure that management is aware if someone is coming to work sick, as it’s best for all if they stay home to rest and recover where there is no concern of infecting those nearby.

How to Protect yourself from COVID-19 Infection
You can reduce your chances of being infected or spreading COVID-19 by taking some simple precautions:
1. Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water
Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.
2. Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and others
When someone coughs, sneezes, or speaks they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person has the disease.
3. Avoid going to crowded places
Where people come together in crowds, you are more likely to come into close contact with someone that has COIVD-19 and it is more difficult to maintain physical distance of 1 metre (3 feet).
4. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth
Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and infect you.
5. Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene
This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately and wash your hands.
By following good respiratory hygiene, you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19.
6. Stay home and self-isolate even with minor symptoms
When experiencing symptoms such as cough, headache, and mild fever, stay at home until you recover. Have someone bring you supplies. If you need to leave your house, wear a mask to avoid infecting others. Avoiding contact with others will protect them from possible COVID-19 and other viruses.
7. Seek medical attention
If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention, but call by telephone in advance if possible and follow the directions of your local health authority.
National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent spread of viruses and other infections.
8. Be informed
Keep up to date on the latest information from trusted sources, such as WHO or NCDC.
Protect yourself and others from getting COVID-19
Safe use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers

- Keep alcohol-based hand sanitizers out of children’s reach. Teach them how to apply the sanitizer and monitor its use.
- Apply a coin-sized amount on your hands. There is no need to use a large amount of the product.
- Avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose immediately after using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, as it can cause irritation.
- Hand sanitizers recommended to protect against COVID-19 are alcohol-based and therefore can be flammable. Do not use before handling fire or cooking.
- Under no circumstance, drink or let children swallow an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. It can be poisonous.
- Remember that washing your hands with soap and water is also effective against COVID-19.

The Challenges of Today’s Job Market
The challenges in the Nigerian job market is enormous. It is like the two sides of a coin with job seekers on one side and hiring managers/recruiters on the other. From the lens of hiring managers, the rate of unemployment in the country can be reduced if applicants develop the necessary soft and hard skills needed on the job.
Highlighted below are some of these challenges;
1. Dearth of requisite skills
One major challenge faced by hiring managers is the dearth of requisite skills in job applicants. They think that most job applicants lack the requisite skills needed by employers of labour. A hiring manager once said “the challenge is finding applicants who have the basic skills for the job.”
2. Skills mismatch
Some hiring managers have opined that there is usually no alignment between vacancies advertised and applications received. That is to say that “the right candidates are not going for the right jobs.”
Probably because of the high rate of unemployment, job seekers plunge at job vacancies whether they have the advertised requirements/skills or not.
3. High number of applicants
The unemployment rate in Nigeria increased to 23.10 percent in the third quarter of 2018 from 22.70 percent in the second quarter of 2018 and it has been projected to trend around 31.4 percent in 2021 and 32.0 percent in 2022. This increasing unemployment rate has resulted in high numbers of job applications.
Although the unemployment rate is high there are still huge numbers of job openings advertised even as the country joins the rest of the world in battling the Coronavirus pandemic.
4. Invincibility of the skilled
Most hiring managers are of the opinion that “highly skilled individuals are often viewed as incompetent due to their inability to write effective CVs”.
Due to the high number of applicants, most hiring managers pass CVs submitted for job openings through Applicant Tracking System and recruiters complain that of hundreds of applicants only a handful have CVs that effectively pass through the system.
Many hiring managers underrate highly skilled applicants due to poorly written CVs.
In my experience, the major challenges faced by job applicants are finding their desired career path, the patience to stay on their path, the knowledge of skills needed in their chosen path, and the right mentorship.
