All parts of the coconut tree are beneficial to humans in some way. The yellowing coconut tree leaves can be used to make baskets, and also woven into mats to form roof thatching, mulching for plants, and even brooms.

However, making a beautiful, handmade broom is simple, enjoyable, and useful. Leaflets from three to four coconut tree fronds are also required. Making a broom out of leaflets will take less than two hours.

The items required, as well as the step-by-step procedure for Handmade Broom, are listed below.

Step 1: Gather the fronds of a coconut tree.

Collect three to four fronds from the bottom-most branches that are turning a little yellow and can be used to make a large broom.

Step 2: Collect and Trim Leaflets

Trim the leaflets from the fronds with a machete. Then collect the leaflets and keep them in a place where you will be able to work comfortably.

Step 3: Construct Broom Stick

1. Take a leaflet and insert the knife between the mid-rib and also the greens 

2. Shear along the mid-rib to separate the greens 

3. The remaining greens can also be pulled down with hands 

4. There may be a thin layer of greens attached to the mid-rib 

Remove these strands from the sticks as well, using the knife.

Step 4: Connect the Sticks

Having collected enough sticks to make a broom.

• Gather all of the sticks and then level the broom’s bottom against a hard surface.

• Tie the broom with coir rope and cut any excess rope.

Step 5: Finish and Trim the Ends

Trim the sweeping end to make it uniform once the bottom of the broom is level and tied together.

• Using your hand, tightly grip the sweeping end of the broom.

• Trim away the excess broom with a garden shear. You can also wrap this end around a piece of wood and trim it with a machete.

Your broom made of coconut tree leaves is now complete.

However, after removing the broom sticks, the remaining material is biodegradable. People in rural areas use them as fuel for cooking as well as heating water. You can also combine them with cow dung to make vermicompost. These materials can also be used as mulch around plants and trees to keep the soil moist.

Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil that comes from the fruit of oil palm trees; the scientific name is Elaeis guineensis. The trees are native to Africa but were brought to South-East Asia; just over 100 years ago as an ornamental tree crop. However, Indonesia and Malaysia make up over 85% of global supply; but there are 42 other countries that also produce the oil.

However, two types of oil can be produced using oil palm; crude palm oil comes from squeezing the fleshy fruit, and also palm kernel oil which comes from crushing the kernel, or the stone in the middle of the fruit.

Although both oils are commonly consumed in our clime, the palm oil is the most used due to its application in cooking and production of various products.

Here are items needed and below is the procedures for the production

Wash the palm fruits

It is important that you wash the palm fruits to remove dirt particles that may be clinging to it from harvesting and while picking it from the bunch.

Boil the palm fruits

Boil for one hour, add a little amount of water into the pot, after putting the palm fruits, make sure the water is not more than the palm fruits. When seeds are beginning to crack open, know that the palm fruits are getting soft.

Mash the boiled palm nuts

You can use mortar and pestle or you can also use your hands to mash it in a bowl. This should be done immediately after boiling.

Separation

Separate the juice from the chaff and the nuts. Sieve until there is no element of chaff left in the juice. When you have finished sieving the juice, cook it until you see the oil floating on the surface. Boil again until oil start coming out.

Bathroom slippers, as the name implies, are a type of footwear that is only intended to be worn in the bathroom. Therefore, they are typically placed at the bathroom’s entrance to avoid confusion with others that may be worn within or outside the home.

Slippers designed specifically for use in the bathroom may be a foreign concept to you, especially if you are used to wearing your shoes around the house. However, bathroom slippers are more common than you might think, and you’ll be surprised to learn that you can adorn and make them fanciful.

In addition, it will interest you to know that the process is quite easy and doesn’t cost much. Hence, a good knowledge of how to adorn slippers with bead can serve as a source of income for you if you commercialize it.

Procedure

1st Step: Cut out a reasonable quantity of string

2nd Step: Fix the string to your needle and then knot the end

3rd Step: Pass the stringed needle through one end of the slippers strap

4th Step: Pass the bead through needle and fasten to the strap

5th Step: Continue the process until the entire slippers strap has been covered with bead as desired.

6th Step: Pass the stopper bead through the string and fasten to the strap, then clamp with presser to prevent the bead from loosening.

These are examples of finished product.

If you love bread as much as I do, it is my pleasure to share with you how to make delicious bread at the comfort of your home.

Bread is one of the world’s oldest food. It is an excellent source of complex carbohydrates, which provides our bodies with energy and aid in the regulation of glucose levels in the blood.

In Nigeria, bread is eaten in combination with other food such as beans, egg, akara, groundnut, pap, butter, moi moi and lots more. Bread does not only taste delicious, but the smell of it makes us happy.

Here is how to make bread from the comfort of your home:

 Ingredients you will need:

• 2 cups of flour
• 2 tablespoons of sugar
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• ½ teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon yeast
• 1 egg
• 50ml of melted margarine
• 60ml of lukewarm milk
• 120ml of lukewarm water

Procedure:

1: Sift flour into a dry and clean mixing bowl

2: Add sugar, baking powder, and salt, then mix

3: Dissolve yeast with 30ml of water from the 120ml of water

4: Break egg in a small mixing bowl and whisk

5: Mix half of the whisked egg with dissolved yeast and lukewarm milk

6: To the flour mixture in 2, add and mix sequentially; the egg mixture, then melted margarine, then water

7: Knead the dough thoroughly

8: Transfer the dough to a hard surface and continue the kneading process till the dough is very smooth non-sticky

9: Slice the dough into your desired size and shape to your desire

10: Grease the pan with margarine

11: Rub melted margarine on dough

12: Put dough in greased pan, and rub whisked egg over it in order to give your bread a nice brown crust.

13. Cover and leave for 45 minutes

14. The dough should be double in size after 45 minutes

15: Preheat oven for 5 minutes, then place dough in it to bake at medium heat.

Viola! Your bread is ready to be devoured!

If an oven is not available for you to bake with, you could use the local method of baking; where baking pan with dough is placed in pot filled with sand over fire.

The novel Clawed to death, written by Maadiah Johnson, is an intriguing sci-fi series book. It tells the story of a teenage boy that’s in an intricate world of his own, after his father’s passing. He is being hunted by mysteries and events he is not prepared for. He has to stand his ground on his own and suppress the shadows that lurk in the dark. But to achieve this, he has to be someone else, he has to be something else!

When asked about her book “Clawed to Death,” Maadiah’s creativity, intertwined in her ability to intricately lay emphasis as a gifted writer, gave an abridged version on her journey to creating the master piece; in her words:

“Clawed to Death” was created in my unbelievable imagination as a 10-year-old girl.

I gathered paper, glued them perfectly together to form a small book, then I designed a unique front cover with the fearsome but analytical title above.

I started writing and the ink kept flowing while my mind kept stringing layers upon layers of words and sentences together. It took three days to finish what my mind had canvassed. Back at school, I was not hesitant to show my classmates what I had done. They were amused at what seemed like a pirated story, but if pirated means an original idea reproduced on the bearer’s mind for endless days and night, then I would agree, it had been pirated.

I kept writing, creating a mental world of bliss that friends could travel to just by weaving through my beautiful word play. Their amusement was a major inspiration; It gave a great sense of satisfaction and pleasure.

Then one day, I stopped.

I stopped and thought: these were kids like me, what about the older population? Would they find stories of wolves and myths as interesting at their level? Were my infantile imaginations going to be controversial? Did the African Society have room to accommodate science fiction literature like mine?

I had to pull back in loss of motivation to go a step further. I piled my works and stashed them in a box in the distant corners of my mind and the house — I stopped writing.

Another ‘child’s play’ sadly ended.

Five years later, during routine home cleaning on a torrid afternoon, I stumbled on a familiar disorderly heap of abandoned books in a box. I smiled: memories of my conjured reality were refreshed. I immediately got back to work!

Thinking, writing, editing, cancelling and writing again, chewing the back end of my pen, I refined those thoughts. It was the Covid-19 lockdown and I had enough time to recreate.

Word after word, line by line, I slowly but consistently cut through the sentence structures until, phew! I heaved in satisfaction.

After hours and days of dictionary usage, sleepless nights and laborious days way beyond what a 10-year-old should endure, “Clawed to Death” was born.

A quick miracle followed: an angel, Mrs Ebere Gomwalk walked into my family’s life, and in the company of this top-notch dude Mr Anthony, an editor with the midas touch, and by her sponsorship, “Clawed to Death” got a publication spot on Amazon.

I dedicate this book to the girl child in particular, and to everyone who ever faced discouragement, redundancy and fear — essentially all of us.
